Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is currently numbered on the United Nations HDI (Human Development Index) as 180 of 187 countries.   It is located in West Africa, and was subject to a civil war for 10 years from 1991.  It is now at peace.

Child mortality rates are almost 20% - unemployment is 70%.  More than 57% of the population lives below the poverty level.  Literacy is as low as 40%.

During the civil war, schools were looted and burned, educational resources disappeared. For a long period, many children did not have access to education at all.

Kanga Schools is focused on assistance with education.  With increased education and literacy, Kanga Schools hopes there will be a change in the statistics in health and employment … and hope for a brighter future.
