D.E.C. Lungi

D.E.C. Primary School Lungi

Located at Kasongha in the Port Loko district, this is a school close to Freetown, but which is accessible by ferry.

With 10 classrooms shared among 1250 students, there is  overcrowding, and classes are conducted in shift.  This school has been “sponsored”  by two brothers who were refugees, but now living in Australia and members of the Kanga team.

Kanga has sent 18 computers to this school, many thousands of books, encyclopedias, educational aids – and the boys at the school love the soccer boots, balls and uniforms.

More recently, with financial assistance from Kanga, the school community has made the mud bricks and erected a new building for the library.  Kanga has also sent a generator to assist with powering the computers when there is electricity shortage.  One of the teachers is currently scheduled to receive training in library management from the library in Freetown.

The principal and staff of this school have told how the local community are now doing computer courses, the books and texts and being used by the students, teachers and parents.

They add that the receipt of a generator has “crowned our joy and happiness.  Before this, we were borrowing and repairing old ones… now we are relieved from of this.”
