Solar Lanterns
Outside the cities, electricity is not available – and even in the cities it is unreliable. The village schools have agreed that the libraries, books, computers can be used by the whole community, including for adult literacy.   To do this, they need to have light at night.

In late 2010, Kanga Schools was funded by a UK charity to provide these schools with solar fluorescent lanterns. Each lantern can provide 40W of fluorescent light for 6 hours – and of course, the power is free.

3 lanterns will power a school library at night.  With solar energy, at no cost.  The panels can be fixed in the roofs - and with a 10 metre cable, the lantern powered from inside and kept secure.

The first lanterns were distributed in May 2011, and there is much anticipation of what can now be achieved.  In February 2012, a further shipment of solar lanterns arrived and yet another in 2013
