Namya Islamic Secondary School, Bo

Bo is the second city in Sierra Leone, with a population of about 250,000.  The Namya Islamic school is a school funded  by one family which provided the land and buildings.  The school has three main buildings with 10 classrooms and some offices.

Namya Islamic secondary school is co-educational and has about 700 students and 30 teachers.  Attached to the secondary school is a primary school with yet more students.  The proprietor has also expressed a wish to add a pre-school which would be available to families in the area.  On receipt of the first shipment of books from Kanga Schools, one of the classrooms was modified for use as a library, and a second classroom has been used as the computer centre.

With financial assistance from Kanga Schools - and community labour to make the mud bricks  - this school has now been able to erect a completely new building to be used as a library and which is available to be used by the community as well as the school.  The school has employed a special library assistant to manage the library, and a committee formed to assist.

Kanga has sent 18 computers installed with software, a generator to assist with the electricity shortage, soccer equipment (balls, boots, shirts), and more than 16,000 books.

In requesting help from Kanga Schools, the Namya proposal recognised the impact of the civil war and the "challenge of schools today to cope with socially disorientated minds.  Rehabilitating them ... to the academic spirit requires a lot of support in books, equipment and other learning materials".
