Madrasatul Hakeem

Madarastul Hakeem school, Calaba Town.

This co-educational primary school is on the east end of Freetown in one of the poorest areas of the country.  The name of the school means in English "School of Wisdom".  The area has a vibrant community and is in the midst of a fast growing population.

With just six classrooms, each classroom is split into two to house 40-45 students.  There are over 450 students in the school.  Crowding is a big problem, and more classrooms are desperately needed.

Not only is the school providing education for the students, but it is also opening up for information session for the parents and Kanga is delighted to be able to assist.

Within just 4 weeks of receipt of its first consignment from Kanga Schools, the Kanga team visiting noted that this school had set up computers and catalogued books for use.  It had built shelving and displayed the books.  Students were already practising with the computer software provided.  It was clear this school was hungry to provide the best it could for its students.

A library is being constructed in 2010, with the effort of the school and financed by Kanga.  Shipments include 14 computers and thousands of books including fiction, junior reference, junior encyclopedias, English readers plus teacher resources.  Soccer uniforms and balls have also been sent.
